Whether it's something you've painted and assembled yourself or something that was assembled/painted by professionals, does anyone here own any resin/coldcast GK figures? How do you feel about them in terms of quality, price, etc. I'll admit I've only dabbled in PVC collecting so far. _________________

I have 3 resin statues in my collection and they are among my 3 favorites
My first two I bought off eBay. Prepainted resins of Kanu by professionals
Actually those were 2 of my earliest purchases. I do not remember but I think that I paid 200.00 for both of them combined with shipping. For the price of PVC these days, I actually think that resin is a better value. As long as you can stick between 100-150. Resins tend to have a little more detail and are painted differently than their PVC conterparts. I really like the airbrushed look that you can achieve with resin statues. The Kanu in the pic standing has a wet T-shirt sort of look (always a crowd pleaser)
My other resin is by far my favorite figure :

Rei - and she is awesome in every detail. The PVC retails for around 65. I picked her up for 110 and worth every penny. The other difference between PVC and resin that you will find is the base. The resins I have have nice sturdy wood bases. No leaners yet
I do not know if this is a difference between the PVc and resin versions of this Rei. But mine is a "cast off"
I guess the only down side that I have found is skin tone. There tends to be a great variation between the PVCs that I own and the resin. _________________

@Xero: I really love that resin Rei. Gawd I want one. >_<
@ShumaGortah: I have two completed resin models that I bought from HLJ a few months ago, a resin prepainted, preassembled version of Rider that I think was done by professionals that I found at Otakon last year and two cold casts of Kanu that I think may also have been done by pros that I found off of eBay. I really like cold cast figures. I don't know why, but I just love them. I actually like resins quite a bit as well. Like Xero said, they have great detail and the bases are so sturdy. I usually only buy a resin figure if there isn't a pvc version or if there likely won't be one. But I'd definitely buy kits if I thought I could actually put them together. _________________

I used to own over 100 in my personal collection that I painted and I used to do some on commission and some I just did to sell them. I really used to enjoy building/painting them then I was in a car accident and no longer have any feeling whatsoever in my right arm so that brought that hobby to a screeching halt.
I sold off all of the ones I had except my Sailor Moon bome kits and a couple of random Evangelion kits I had given Violent before I decided I didn't want to look at any of the kits anymore. I did recently buy a few but they have just sat in their boxes untouched. _________________

If you mean GK, most of my collections are GK then. Max Factory and Kaiyodo used to be favourite, but they don't make Garage kit anymore.
Many of my Belldandy kit are from Max Factory, and some of my all time favourite FFS kits are from Kaiyodo. |

Thanks for all the responses guys. Even though PVC figures are out in full force there are still many beautiful resin/cold-cast figures out there that never get the PVC treatment; perhaps many of them are too difficult to replicate or mass produce? _________________

The more I look at these the more I want to try making my own figures as well. _________________

It's alot more rewarding then buying PVC's, you get full say in how your figure should look and white resin is very high quality. |

Couple noob questions
1. What is a cold cast? (too lazy to wiki it)
2. How hard is it to paint a resin kit from scratch? Does it take a lot of time to learn? How much do you have to spend on a starter kit (paint, brush, thinner, etc). _________________

Depends on you. Typically around $200+ for a good airbrush+compressor equipment and around $50+ for paints, thinner, etc.
And check the Modeling Corner for other stuffs and tips. _________________
